Most, if not all of us, have been stranded at one time or another because our car broke down, had a flat tire, ran out of gas, etc.  Get organized and be better prepared next time with these recommended essentials!

ESSENTIALS FOR YOUR TRUNK:
  • First aid kit (keep in mind to include anything particular to you or your family)
  • Fire extinguisher (it should be rated for Class B and Class C fires by the National Fire Protection Association)
  • Tire gauge
  • Foam tire sealant and/or a tire patch
  • Jumper cables
  • Flashlight and extra batteries

  • Gloves
  • Rags
  • Duct tape
  • Tow strap or tow rope (strong enough to tow 6,000 pounds)
  • Multipurpose utility tool (Swiss Army Knife)
  • Rain poncho
  • Fresh drinking water
  • Nonperishable snacks
  • Warm blanket
  • Snow shovel (if it makes sense)
  • Cat litter (it works as well as sand beneath the tires for traction and weighs less)
  • Windshield ice scraper
  • Three reflective warning triangles and/or road flares
  • Tire jack
  • Umbrella
  • Oil/wiper fluid/gas
  • Matches
  • Spare tire (make sure it is inflated)
  • Tire pump

CONTAINERS FOR YOUR CAR:
Here are a few links to containers that will help you organize these essential items for your car! Be sure to secure whatever container you use so that it won't easily tip over.  Velcro works wonders!

Organize Your Ride has great organizers for inside your car as well!
Various Trunk Organizer options may be found when visiting this link
Amazon.com offers additional options as well

ESSENTIALS FOR YOUR GLOVEBOX:
  • Car owner's manual
  • License/registration/proof of insurance
  • Pen/paper
  • Phone charger (be sure your cell phone charger is compatible with either a power outlet or a USB port in your car)
  • Spare change for a parking meter/parking card
  • List of names/phone numbers to call in case of an emergency

NICE TO HAVE:
  • Change of clothes
  • Jacket
  • Tennis shoes

love this list deb. one of my tips: when I get a new pair of tennis shoes, I put the old ones (with a pair of socks) in my trunk in case I have to walk somewhere from a break down, after an earthquake, etc.--I will automatically have a comfy pair of walking shoes available.
